Ardjan's Cochins

Cochinday 2007

The third Cochinday was a successful event again. Breeders form the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, England and Romania came to Zeddam. A number of them had already been there before, but there were a lot of new faces present.

The number of entries was smaller than last time, because only 42 Large Cochins were entered. The bantams were present with 142 birds. Some 45 more than last time.

The birds were judged by Michael Hatcher from England ( Cochins), the talented young judge Mike Gallsch from Germany, Ronald Vos, Hendrik Timmer and Hans Ringnalda from Holland shared the bantams. The best male and female of the bantams were picked out by Gijs van den Over (NL). Not all clubs from Europe sponsored this year, but because many private-persons did give awards there were quite some nice things to win. Even the president of the American Cochinclub, Tom Roebuck, presented two awards for the best and second best partridge Cochin. The main prizes were the Cochinday-rosettes for the best large and best bantam. Peter Heywood, president of the English Cochinclub gave € 50,- for the best Cochin.

Among the visitors were Bobo Athes and his wife, who had come all the way from Romania to attend this day.

Judging started at about 10.30. While the judges were doing this, the breeders could be present and some discussions took place. On a day like this one can always learn something. At 12.30 there was lunch. Some judges had to judge some birds after lunch and had to pick out their best birds and report them to Gerrit. The best four males and females of the bantams came into special cages. Gijs van den Oever picked out the best birds, explaining to the breeders how he had come to his best birds in his very own way. The applauses showed that everybody enjoyed his performance. After that a picture was taken of the whole group of people who were there. Gerrit and his son made the list of winners, and after a short break the awards were presented. In the Cochins I liked best an old partridge hen from myself, two nice mottled pullets from Lüppens, some nice pullets in black of Lüppens and Lieder, a blue cockerel from Lensing and a lovely pullet in cuckoo from Lieder. In the bantams nice birds in black, very nice birds in white from father and son van Moerkerk, a large class of mottled with good material, twelve pearl-grey (lavender) of very good quality and in partridge, a colour that nearly died out a few years ago, seventeen birds.
